The Icelandic men’s football team beat the Netherlands yesterday 1-0 in the UEFA qualifiers for the European Soccer Championship which will be held in France next year. The winning goal was scored by Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson, who plays midfield with Swansea City early in the second half of the game, at 51 minutes.

Iceland had the upper hand throughout the game. In the 33rd minute Bruno Martins Indi of the Dutch team given a red card and sent off after lashing out and taking a swing at Kolbeinn Sigþórsson of the Icelandic team.

The loss against Iceland was the first ever home defeat for the Dutch in Euro qualifying history.
The goal was greeted with cheers in downtown Reykjavík where a giant screen had been erected on Ingólfstorg where hundreds watched the game outdoors. Thousands more crammed into sports bars around town.
Iceland has a strong shot at advancing to the finals
Iceland now tops the Group A in the qualifiers with 18 points, followed by the Czech Republic with 16 points in the second place and the Netherlands in third place with 10 points. The win has greatly increased Iceland’s chances of advancing to the EURO 2016 finals.
Iceland has never reached a major tournament finals. Iceland has yet to play three games in the qualifiers. Home games against Kazakhstan (September 6), Latvia (October 10) and an away game against Turkey (October 13). A home win at Laugardalsvöllur arena against Kazakhstan on Sunday would guarantee Iceland a place at EURO 2016. Kazakhstan is in last place in Group A.
