Beginning next summer Madrid will be the only Spanish destination for Icelandair. Icelandair has been flying to Barcelona for some time, but the airline has announced that it will drop the Barcelona flights in favor of Madrid. Three other airlines have offered direct flights between Keflavík and Barcelona, WOW air, Norwegian and Vueling.
The change has nothing to do with the political situation in Spain or the declaration of independence by Catalonia, but everything to do with supply and demand. According to the local news site Túristi Icelandair has had significantly more success selling its Madrid-Keflavík flights than those out of Barcelona.
The airline has carried twice as many passengers between the capital of Spain and Iceland than the capital of Catalonia and Iceland. This past summer Icelandair offered weekly flights to Barcelona, while the competitors offered two or three weekly flights. Icelandair plans to double the number of flights to Madrid.
