Airline pilots at Icelandair will stage a twelve-hour work stoppage on May 9 from 6 AM to 6 PM if a wage dispute between them and the company has not been resolved.
The pilot's union called the action in an overwhelming vote on April 29. Of the 330 members, 295 voted in favour of the strike, with none voting against the stoppage. Friday's strike will be the first of five work stoppages if no agreement is reached. The scheduled strikes are:
May 9 6 AM to 6 PM
May 16 6 AM to 6 PM
May 20 6 Am to 6 PM
May 23 6 AM to May 25 6AM
May 30 6 AM to June 3 6 AM
According to SA-Confederation of Icelandic Employers (a service organization for Icelandic businesses) the pilots are demanding a wage hike of 30 percent. Recent wage agreements in the Icelandic labour market are much lower than the 30 percent, or below 5 percent.
If the strike goes through on May 9, up to 7.000 passengers of Icelandair will be affected. Nine other airlines will operate scheduled flights to and from Iceland this summer.
