Hippie Express: An old airline with a colorful history
Icelandair traces its roots back to 1937 when Flugfélag Akureyrar (Akureyri Airways) was founded in the town of Akureyri in North Iceland. In 1940 the company was re-launched as Flugfélag Íslands (Iceland Airways) in Reykjavík. While this company began regular flights to European destinations in 1946, flying to Scotland and Denmark, it concentrated on domestic flights during the post-war years.
A second Icelandic airline: Loftleiðir (Skyways), founded in 1947, meanwhile had significant success building up transatlantic routes between the US and North Europe. The company was particularly successful marketing cheap flights connecting North America and Europe in the 1960s, becoming a favorite among young Americans travelling to Europe. The airline, which was officially known as Icelandic Airlines, was therefore usually referred to as Hippie Airlines or Hippie Express.
In 1979 the two companies merged, creating the basis of current day Icelandair.
