Airline mechanics with Icelandair have approved a new wage contract. The mechanics went on strike on December 17, but postponed the strike on December 19 after a new wage contract had been signed. The contract didn't come into effect until it had been voted on by the 290 members of the union.
Earlier today the voting had been completed and the votes tallied. A solid majority of the members voted to approve the contract which covers the period until December 31 2019. The contract will likely be a model for other labor contracts with airline employees who will be negotiating new labor contracts in the coming months.
The strike, which lasted 46 hours, only affected Icelandair flights. A total of 64 flights were canceled due to the strike, affecting the travel plans of 20,000 passengers.
