Judging by a trailer for the fifth season for the History Channel drama Vikings, Iceland will play a key role in the next season of the hit TV series. The trailer seems to show one of the main characters of the series, Flóki, standing on a black sand beach in South Iceland.

The trailer is a teaser for the next season of the series, released at the same time as the fourth season is coming to an end. History Channel has yet to announce when the fifth season will be aired. Michael Hirst, the creator of the series announced on Reddit that the viewers would get to follow the Vikings to Iceland.

Flóki seems to be based on Flóki Vilgerðarson, better known as Raven-Flóki, Hrafna-Flóki, as he had three ravens with him to help him navigate. Raven Flóki was one of the first Viking explorers to come explore Iceland, landing in Vatnsfjörður fjord on the south coast of the Westfjords.

One of the most important settlers of Iceland
According to one of the most important of the Icelandic Manuscripts, The Book of Settlements, Landnáma, which tells the story of the first settlers of Iceland, Raven Flóki gave Iceland its name. After landing in Vatnsfjörður fjord, Flóki and his companions spent the summer fishing and hunting, but failed to prepare adequately for the winter.

Flóki and his companions spent the winter in Vatnsfjörður, but as they hadn't gathered sufficient feed for their animals, they lost their livestock during the cold winter and spring. The next spring Flóki then climbed one of the mountains in Vatnsfjörður, looking to the North where he saw a great fjord full of drift ice. Flóki then gave this new land the name the land of ice: Ísland, or Iceland. Flóki spent the following winter in Borgarfjörður fjord in West Iceland, but then sailed back to Norway. He later returned to settle in Skagafjörður fjord in North Iceland.
