Iceland moves above France in the FIFA ranking 1803

As the Icelandic men’s team prepares to meet the Netherlands tonight a new world ranking by FIFA shows that Iceland has moved up one spot to 23rd place, topping France the former world and European champions in football. This is the first time Iceland has topped France in the FIFA world ranking.

The Icelandic team is in the 16th place among 54 European national teams. The Icelandic team is still well below the Dutch team, which is ranked as the 12th best in the world. The US team is ranked as the 28th best team in the world, five places below Iceland.

The local news site visir.is points out there is a second development on this newly released list. Denmark moves up three places into 22nd place, which means the Icelandic men’s team is no longer ranked the strongest men’s football team in the Nordics. Sweden is 36th place, Norway in 69th place, the Faroe Islands in 75th place and Finland in 92nd place.
