Iceland is the third best place in the world to be a mother, according to Save the Children’s annual report 2788

The Nordic countries are the best places in the world to be a mother, according to Save the Children’s newest annual State of the World’s Mothers report. Iceland comes in third, after Norway and Finland.

The five indicators in the index are the lifetime risk of maternal death; children's well-being as measured by their under-5 mortality rate; educational status; economic status, as measured by gross national income per capita; and political status, measured by women's participation in national government.

Women in Iceland face a 1 in 11,500 risk of maternal death, while 2.1 % of Icelandic children die before their 5th birthday.

 

Best countries for mothers:

1.    Norway

2.    Finland

3.    Iceland

4.    Denmark

5.    Sweden

Worst countries for mothers:

1.    Somalia

2.    Democratic Republic of the Congo

3.    The Central African Republic

4.    Mali

5.    Niger
