Iceland in a comic form 2657

13. mar 2023 20:14

Lonnie Mann is a comic artist based in the US. On a visit to Iceland in 2012, and then spent a year and a half making a travelogue comic about it at www.LonnieComics.com. The comic is called Thoughts From Iceland, and is according to Lonnie inspired by John & Hank Green’s “Thoughts From Places” videos on youtube.

Lonnie has self-published very small runs of the comic in three short volumes, which he sells online. But they're expensive to print, and expensive for people to buy, so now he is raising money on Kickstarter to print professional-quality, perfect-bound, softcover books of the whole finished comic. Plus, it includes 30+ pages of new watercolors and stories about the second trip I took to Iceland, a year later, an Icelandic glossary, and pronunciation guide, Lonnie says.

When did you start producing comic strips?
While I've been drawing basically forever, I startes making comics when I went back to school at the School of Visual Arts in NYC in 2010.

Why did you decided on this format?
I've always loved drawing and telling stories, but it took a surprisingly long time for me to realize I could combine those things in the form of comics. Even though I grew up reading comics too.

How long does a comic strip usually take you?
While it depends on the complexity of a particular strip, the ones in Thoughts From Iceland typically took about four evenings' worth of work, at about 4 hours each night.

What is your favourite strip?
I don't think I have a single favorite, but I'd choose either one of the strips in which I hope on a glacier, or at the end when I got to meet Jónsi and Alex!

The former let me use a more painterly style, and the latter was just really exciting to recount.

What is your most popular strip?
People are generally pretty entertained by the idea of the Phallological museum near Hlemmur station. So, my visit there got good reactions.

What's the procedure you go through?
This particular series is actually based on my first trip to Iceland, during which I took extensive notes and a lot of pictures. So the comics are really just about my experiences while I was there.
