Iceland had a positive balance of trade in 2016, thanks to tourism 947

The surplus of balance of trade in goods and services in 2016 was 158.8 billion ISK (1.5 billion USD/1.4 billion EUR) according to the preliminary figures for 2016 published by Statistics Iceland. The surplus dropped slightly from 2015 when it amounted to 166.6 billion ISK.

Trade surplus ca 6.8% of GDP
The surplus balance of trade in 2016 corresponds to roughly 6.8% of GDP. 

The trade surplus is due to a large surplus in services. Iceland had a deficit in the trade of goods in 2016 of 101.5 billion ISK, while the surplus of balance of trade in services was 260,341 million ISK. The most important contributor to the surplus in the export of services was tourism.

According to Statistics Iceland the trade surplus from travel and tourism in 2016 amounted to 299.8 billion ISK, accounting for virtually the entire surplus in the trade in services.
