Iceland was left stunned but ecstatic after yesterday’s win against England, thereby becoming the smallest country to proceed to the quarter finals of the European Championships. Iceland will next face France on Sunday.
England quickly took the lead through Wayne Rooney’s penalty. However, Iceland managed to equalise only minutes later, and scored the winning goal on the 18th minute.
During a post-match interview with the National Broadcasting Service, coach Heimir Hallgrímsson said the team will remember yesterday’s match for a very long time. “I think we’ll speak of this day many times in the future: Remember Nice?”
Adding: “Some had not anticipated a win and had made plans with their families. Unfortunately, they’ll have to continue for a little longer and face the French team in France. Which is even better.”
A huge crowd of people gathered at Arnarhóll hill, downtown Reykjavík, to watch the game on a giant screen that had been especially erected for the England match. The crowd erupted into great applause and with chants of “Áfram Ísland” as the match ended. And when team captain Aron Einar Gunnarsson lead spectators in France into a jubilant applaud, fans in Iceland joined in.
The celebrations carried on well into the small hours of the morning.
