According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, 6000 earthquakes occurred in Iceland throughout the month of May. May 3 – 5 was especially seismic, with 1100 earthquakes taking place in the three day span.
A large majority of the 6000 earthquakes were small tremors, only felt in the mountains. However, on May 8th a level 4 quake trembled just east of Þjórsá and was felt in many towns in the south of Iceland.
