Iceland tops the list as the world's most peaceful country for the 9th consecutive year. The list is called the Global Peace Index (GPI) and Iceland has remained in the top seat since it was launched in May 2007.

According to the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), which compiles the list, it is the world’s leading measure of national peacefulness.

The Global Peace Index ranks 162 nations according to their ‘absence of violence’.

According to IEP the index is composed of 22 indicators, ranging from, a nation’s level of military expenditure to its relations with neighbouring countries, low murder rate, minimal violent crimes and the percentage of prison population.

The data is sourced from a wide range of respected sources, including the International Institute of Strategic Studies, The World Bank and various UN Agencies.
