Iceland‘s foreign affairs minister, Gunnar bragi Sveinsson, announced yesterday that Iceland and Suriname are to convene a U.N conference on women and gender equality. However, only men are invited to partake in the event.

The unusual conference is part of the global campaign HeForShe, launched earlier this month.

As part of her role as UN Women Goodwill ambassador, the British actress Emma Watson spoke at the launch of the initiative about the need to bring men into the fight for gender equality – and it seems Gunnar Bragi agrees.

We want to bring men and boys to the table on gender equality in a positive way, the minister said. Adding that the event will focus on violence against women.
