An unidentified body was discovered near Sandfell, an abandoned farmstead in the foothills of Öræfajökull glacier in South East Iceland. The authorities suspect that the body is of a foreign traveller. The case is being investigated by the Police in South Iceland.
According to a statement from the Police in South Iceland members of ICE-SAR found the body near Sandfell around noon today. The Chief Superintendent for the Police in South Iceland told the local news site Vísir that an employee of the car rental company had contacted the Police after the company had been notified the car had stood abandoned at a parking lot near Sandfell for several days. The car had been rented to a foreign traveller.
At present it is not known how long the car had been standing at the parking lot. The police has not released any further information about the body or the car.
Sandfell is a popular stopping spot on the Ring Road through Öræfi district. A picturesque cemetery with a sole tree and the ruins of a turf farm are the only things that remain of a once prosperous farmstead.Prior to the 1362 eruption of Öræfajökull, the second deadliest eruption in Icelandic history, Sandfell was one of the most important farms in the region.
