Seventy members of ICE-SAR companies from Reykjavík assisted trafellers who were stuck om Mosfellsheiði and Holtavörðuheiði heaths during yesterdays storm. The road from Reykjavík to Þingvellir National Park runs across Mosfellsheiði heath, while the Ring Road from Reykjavík to South Iceland crosses Holtavörðuheiði heath.
Two tour buses stuck on Mosfellsheiði
Due to strong winds and blowing snow which reduced visibility the road across Mosfellsheiði heath was closed yesterday afternoon. Driving conditions were made even worse by ice on the road. Two tour buses were stranded in snow on Mosfellsheiði, as well as dozens of cars. The travellers had all been escorted to safety by half past eight and the heaths were then plowed. Both roads have been re-opened.

Yellow Weather Warning was in effect
The Road and Coastal Authority closed the road across Mosfellsheiði yeasterday afternoon after conditions on the heath had deteriorated rapidly. Strong winds and snowfall reduced visibility and made driving conditions extremely difficult. Dozens of cars and two tour buses, who had been caught in the storm, got stuck on the road and were unable to return to Reykjavík.
Holtavörðuheiði heath was then closed late afternoon due to the deteriorating weather and a traffic accident on the heath.
