ÍBV won its first ever handball Championship after defeating Haukar 29-28 in front of a packed crowd in Hafnarfjörður town, the home of their opponents.
The event security guards did nothing to restrain the joyous supporters from rushing the court after the final buzzer sounded and ÍBV had won the match. Although ÍBV was the visiting team, The Westman Islands club had tremendous support from their traveling fans as 1,000 supporters made the trip to the mainland for the final game.
Additionally, a large crowd of the town's 4.200 inhabitants greeted the Champions as they arrived back at the pier in the Westman Islands. The crowd that had gathered at the ship Herjólfur docks had an experience they would never forget, as loud cheers and a party-like atmosphere filled the air in celebration.
The game itself was a very tightly contested match with both teams having numerous opportunities to come out victorious. Haukar put up a valient fight on their home court, but came up just short in the end. It was ÍBV´s fighting spirit and ability to handle the pressure filled moments that allowed them to upend Haukar in the decisive game.
The fans present in the stadium and watching at home on TV were treated to an end to end match that had many twists and turns. Everytime it looked like Haukar would run away with the game, ÍBV would make a quick run to even the match.
