The American, who wound up at Laugarvegur street in the fishing village of Siglufjörður in North Iceland, instead of Reykjavík’s main thoroughfare, due to a typo, says he enjoyed the lovely scenery during his 5-hour-long drive from Reykjavík.
Noel Santillan, a 28-year-old from New Jersey, had just arrived in Keflavík after a five hour flight from New York and picked up his rental car. He entered the address of his hotel into the car’s GPS system and proceeded to follow directions. However, he began to suspect something was amiss after having driven for some time, with no hotel in sight. He entered the address two more times, each time the system directed him to Siglufjörður.
In an interview with local newsagent Vísir, Noel explained that road conditions had been poor due to snowdrift and ice but he had enjoyed the scenery during the drive. “I was very tired after the flight and wanted to get to the hotel as soon as possible. That’s why I kept driving. I did enjoy the scenery on the way. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. And the horses!”
According to Vísir, Noel intends to drive back to Reykjavík today and check into Hotel Frón at Laugavegur street. That’s Laugavegur without an ‘r’.
