The whaling company Hvalur hf., the only Icelandic company engaged in commercial whaling of fin whales, has already shipped 1,500 metric tons (3.3 million lbs) of fin whale meat to Japan. The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that the meat was loaded onboard a transport vessel in Hafnafjörður harbor, in the Metropolitan Ara on Saturday. The ship is currently en route to Japan.

Kristján Loftsson, the CEO and principal owner of Hvalur hf. told Morgunblaðið that the ship would take the North-East passage through the Arctic. The cargo of the vessel consists of meat from this year's catch. A small portion of the products from the 144 fin whales caught this summer is still stored in the deep freeze. Hvalur hf. has previously shipped its products to Japan via the Arctic
