According to the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, nearly 200 people sought shelter in Staðarskáli, a roadside restaurant off Route 1, during yesterday’s blizzard. Holtavörðuheiði road was closed yesterday due to severe weather and remained impassable until this morning. This is the second time this year that Staðarskáli becomes a haven for weather-bound travellers.
Another 100 people were forced to spend the night in Reykjaskóli school after attempting to cross Laxárdalheiði heath rather than waiting for Holtavörðuheiði to reopen, and sixty people lodged in Laugabakki.

Search and Rescue members began to transport motorists back to their vehicles at 9 am this morning, shortly after Holtavörðuheiði has been cleared of snow.
The Icelandic Met Office has issued a strong gale warning for all parts of the country tomorrow noon. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly around noon tomorrow.
