Crevasses up to six kilometers (3.7 mi) have opened up above Dyngjökull outlet, which is a part of the Bárðarbunga volcanic system in Vatnajökull glacier. According to ruv.is this was noticed when an over-flight was made to Bárðarbunga by the Icelandic Coastguard with scientists from the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) and the University of Iceland and Civil Protection today. At this time the geoscientist have not commented on this new development.

IMO reports that almost 1300 earthquakes have been detected connected to the Bárðarbunga volcanic sytem since last midnight. This activity has mostly been in the intrusive dike, which now stretches some 12 km north of the glacier‘s edge towards Askja, another big volcanic system in the central highlands.
