With a steady increase of tourists to Iceland in the past few years, hotels continue to pop-up around the city to accommodate all the travellers.
The number of nights spent in hotel rooms, guesthouses, campsites, and other places of accommodation in Iceland increased by 15% from 2012 to 2013 according to Statistics Iceland. Regardless of this increase, an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Iceland, Sveinn Agnarsson, warns that building more hotels could lead to supply exceeding demand.
Weekly business newspaper Vidskiptabladid references his interview and his mention of how Copenhagen added 3,000 hotel rooms in a short amount of time only to leave a number of those rooms empty. Agnarsson reiterates that even though visitors to Iceland have been on the increase in the past few years, there’s no guarantee of a continuation.
