While contractors work hard at digging a tunnel to shorten the trip between Akureyri town and Húsavík town, 50°C (122°F) water keeps spewing out the crevices, slowing down the workers.
The CEO of Vaðlaheiðagöng hf. told visir.is that the workers are only blasting 10 to 15 meters at a time and then using mixed cement to fill the crevices from which that water flows from. While the contractors are working their way past these water-crevices, they will alternate between blasting the rock, and filling up the rifts that are created.
The Vaðlaheiðagöng tunnel is now 28 percent completed, but once fully completed it will reduce travel between Akureyri and Húsavík by 16km.
