The residents of Hornafjörður, southeast Iceland, have requested stricter regulations regarding camping in the area, reports Vísir. Residents want to limit backcountry camping and propose that camping only be allowed in camping sites.

Legally, tent camping is allowed on uncultivated land for one night however, this could change if the Hornafjörður council accepts stricter camping rules.

According to Vísir, residents hope that stricter rules will help preserve nature and prevent the widespread disposal of waste along Route 1. “Many travellers have not been disposing of waste properly, leaving landowners and local authorities with the task, and the bill, of cleaning up after them,” the proposal read.

A good number of well-facilitated camping sites are found along Route 1 that are well suited to accommodate tents, campervans, and tent trailers.

Iceland Insider kindly reminds guests that wish to experience backcountry camping to carry out what they carry in! Please bury human waste in a 10 centimetres (4 inches) deep hole, away from water, trails, and campsites.
