Iceland’s contribution to the Venice Biennale, The Mosque: First Mosque in the Historic City of Venice was shut down on May 22, as Venetian authorities considered it to be a security threat. Organisers are working to have the decision revoked.

“The installation must continue. We’ve rented the pavilion until November and we’d prefer to keep it open to visitors until that time. We’ll continue to try and reach an agreement with the Venetian government in order to have it reopened,” said curator Nína H. Magnúsdóttir in an interview with news website Vísir.
The installation was created by Swiss/Icelandic artist Christoph Büchel and is located in a former Catholic church in the Cannaregio neighbourhood. The piece has caused much stir among Venetians and local authorities.
