The Institute of Earth Sciences at the National University transformed the Holuhraun lava field into a Santa-hat for their Christmas card. A clever member of staff spotted the similarities between the shape of the lava field and a pointed Santa-hat and added a little tassel on to the graph of the eruption site.
The Christmas card read: “We'll keep an eye on the lava, but… Merry Christmas!”
The Bárðarbunga eruption continues with little variation and the new lava field is now almost 80 square kilometres (31 sq mile) in size. An extensive lava tube system has formed inside the field, bringing a supply of lava to the outer areas. Earthquake activity remains constant under the caldera, which continues to subside at a stable rate.
