Skútustaðahreppur municipality, the Icelandic Place Name Committee, the Institute of Earth Science, and representatives for Vatnajökull National Park voted between four name suggestions; Holuhraun received two votes, while Nornahraun (Witch’s Lava) and Urðarbruni received one each. The fourth suggestion, Flæðahraun, did not receive the committee’s stamp of approval.
