History professor who hasn’t entered the race running neck-to-neck with Ólafur Ragnar in new poll 4749

A poll conducted for the business monthly Frjáls Verslun shows that presidential historian Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, associate professor of history at the University of Iceland, enjoys the support of 27% of voters, while sitting president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson enjoys the support of 32%.

When asked whether they would vote for Guðni or Ólafur, if those were the only choices, Guðni beat Ólafur by two percentage points. Of those who expressed a preference 51.1% said they would vote for Guðni and 48.9% would vote for Ólafur.

Guðni Th. Jóhannesson has so far refused to answer whether he will enter the race.

The poll asked respondents to say whom they wanted as the next president of Iceland if they could pick any Icelander. Two individuals stood out, being mentioned by 59% of the 74% of respondents who could name a candidate: Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who was named by 32% of respondents and Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, who was named by 27%.

All others were named by fewer than 10% of respondents. Katrín Jakobsdóttir, former minister of education and chairman of the Left Green party was named by 8% of respondents and Andri Snær Magnason, author and environmental activist was named by 6%. Katrín has already ruled out that she would enter the race.

When people were presented with only two choices, re-electing Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson to a sixth term, or voting for Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, 51.1% said they would vote for Guðni, and 48.9% would vote for Ólafur.
