Highland roads remain closed or impassable: Road 861 closed after swelling river washes parts away 4956

While the summer seems to have arrived in Reykjavík the spring has barely arrived in the Central Highlands, which means the winter’s snow cover is just beginning to melt. As a consequence all highland roads remain either closed or impassable due to snow and snow melt.

Other roads, which should under normal circumstances be open, have been closed. Among these is road 864, which connects the ring road to the highland farm Grímsstaðir á Fjöllum located in the middle of a popular highland destination on account it being easily accessed from the ring-road. Friday morning the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority closed the road due to extensive water damages to the road, caused by meltwater.
