High School Teachers still on strike with 20.000 students out of school 101

Friday a week ago it seemed as if the teachers strike would go ahead but wouldn’t last long. A week later there’s no end in sight as the State and the Teacher’s Union seem to be unable to come to an agreement in their negotiations.

Teachers are asking for a 17% salary rectification, but the State is offering a 2.8% pay raise which is what other State workers have gotten. The 2.8% would continue leaving teachers’ salaries far below other employees of the State. The strike, which affects all high schools in Iceland, except Verslunarskólinn, has around 20.000 students out of school.

Minister of Education wants the Teacher’s Union to agree to a shortening the required high school education from four years down to three. Teachers, however, say that reducing the amount of years students are required to be at school is irrelevant to their current salary negotiations.
