High avalanche hazard on Tröllaskagi peninsula, North Iceland 2674

A big avalanche hit the main road leading to town Siglufjörður, North Iceland, yesterday evening. No one was hurt but several cars on their way to the town got stuck behind the massive amount of snow.

The avalanche hit west of Siglufjörður fjord, near Strákagöng tunnel and closed the road that connects the town to Northwest, West and South Iceland. Members from Siglufjördur town’s search and rescue team were able to transport people from the stuck cars over the avalanche and to town.

According to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) there is a considerable danger of avalanches in mountains in the Westfjords and East Iceland and high danger on Tröllaskagi peninsula in North Iceland, where yesterday’s avalanche hit. However no towns or habituated areas are in danger.
