High air pollution was detected in Reykjahlíð in Mývatnssveit, North Iceland, at 11pm yesterday when sulphur gases (SO2) measured 1.250 micrograms per cubic meter. According to the Environment Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun, sulphur dioxide can affect public health should its levels exceed 600 µg/m³.
The Icelandic Met Office says that high concentration of sulphur dioxide is expected in the north eastern regions of the country, mostly in the Mývatn area, Kelduhverfi district, Tjörnes peninsula, Húsavík, Aðaldalur valley and Reykjahverfi district. This forecast is valid until midnight tonight (Monday).
According to the National Broadcasting Service measurements in Reykjavík yesterday evening revealed high concentration of sulphur dioxide in the capital. Þorsteinn Jóhannsson, a specialist with The Environment Agency of Iceland explains that air pollution from the Holuhraun eruption is now being detected in other parts of the country.
