A cat woke its owner during a house fire in Ásbrú, Reykjanes peninsula, by clawing at the bedroom door, reports Vísir.

The woman awoke and managed to escape the apartment building with her young daughter. Moments later, firefighters found the family’s three cats unconscious inside the bedroom. The felines were rushed to the nearest veterinary clinic where they are recovering very well.

It took firefighters a short time to put out the blaze and its cause is now under investigation.

According to Vísir, the three cats usually enter the apartment through an open window in the living room, however, this morning one of the cats began to claw relentlessly at the bedroom door, waking its owner.

“She opens the door and sees the fire blazing. At the time, the apartment had filled with smoke and fire. She grabs her daughter and manages to escape through the backdoor,” said Sigvaldi Arnar Lárusson, with the Reykjanes Police Department.

The three cats received first aid care at site before being transported to the closest veterinary clinic.
