Like the national team, Icelandic football fans have become a big hit at the European Championship final in France. The supporters have shown exceptional conduct while supporting the team and have created much noise at the stadiums when Iceland is playing.
It’s so refreshing to see positive behavior making the headlines instead of the ugly hooliganism so often associated with football fans of some other teams, which have suffered for a tiny foolish fraction of their followers.
The celebratory “Viking war cry”, a clap and chant, has become Iceland’s fans signature move. Now you can have it as a ring tone, here is an MP3 download link we have created (right) or click here.
The “Viking war cry” found its way into Icelandic football via Scotland as supporters of Icelandic football team Stjarnan made the chant theirs, after being inspired by fans of Motherwell when the teams met in the UEFA Europa League in 2014.
Stjarnan’s supporters club Silfurskeiðin, meaning “The Silver Spoon”, mastered it quickly and taught it to the national team’s supporters club “The Twelve” (Tólfan in Icelandic, meaning the twelfth man).
As you can see below it was a real goose bumps moment when the national team led the fans at Nice’s stadium into the Viking “war cry” at the end of the match against England, showing their appreciation for the supporters’ dedication and support on the way to the famous victory.
Þvílíkur árangur! Ævintýrið heldur bara áfram. Sjáðu landsliðið fagna með bláa hafinu! Smá gæsahúð. #EMÍsland https://t.co/Fki1vsWIRl

Now the war cry is travelling around the world. The popular English rock band Mumford & Sons even led fans into it when performing at the Roskilde Music Festival in Denmark on Sunday night, while congratulating Iceland on the victory against their countrymen. No sour grapes there!
Icelander Bergdís Þrastardóttir was at the concert and captured this fantastic moment on her mobile phone.
