Exotic international cuisine has become increasingly popular in Iceland over the past couple of decades. The opening of numerous specialised grocery stores has allowed Reykjavikings to experiment even further in the kitchen at home and have a crack at Asian, Turkish and Polish cuisine. Channel 2’s news programme, Ísland í dag (Iceland today), visited a number of these stores and interviewed their owners. You can watch the segment below.

Yusef owns and runs Istanbul Market at Ármúli 42 where customers will find many authentic Turkish foods and goods, including yoghurt, cheese, and spices.

Near Hlemmur bus station you’ll find Euro Market which carries all kinds of Polish groceries and sweets.

Krydd og tehúsið, Þverholt 7, opened shortly before Christmas. The store specialises in tea and spices and boasts a broad selection of spices imported from Morocco.

Mai Thai has a great selection of Asian products such as exotic fruits and vegetables, sweets and crisps.

In the span of a year, Reykjavík’s Grandi harbour area has transformed into a food paradise offering a variety of new and exciting delicatessen shops including the wildly popular ice cream parlour Valdís, Búrið cheese shop, the specialty meat store Matarbúrið, and 17 sortir, a brand new cupcake shop that offers a rotating selection of 17 decadent cakes each day.
