A heavy storm occurred near Álftavatn lake in Fjallabak, central highlands, yesterday evening. Rescue units were called in to help people to safety who had set up tents in the area.

In an interview with the National Broadcasting Service, Stefán Jökull Jakobsson, head ranger with Ferðafélag islands (the Iceland Touring Association), said the winds became extremely heavy in the blink of an eye.
“I can only guess how strong the gales were. I weigh a hundred kilos (220 pounds) and was being thrown to and fro by the wind. Tents began to rip up from the ground and tear apart,” he said.

According to Stefán, he and members of the rescue unit assisted people to pack their belongings and get to safety. “They were very frightened and few had experienced winds like this before.”

Around fifty campers spent the night, safe and sound from winds, in Heimaland lodge near Eyjafjöll mountains.
