The National Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for the south and west coast. Strong prevailing southern winds in southern and western areas, particularly on the northern tip of Snæfellsnes peninsula where winds have reached a speed of 50 metres per second.
Heavy rains have followed and parts of Ólafsvík town, have been flooded.
People are recommended to avoid all non-essential journeys that require travelling the Holtavörðuheiði and Öxnadalsheiði mountain roads.
