Emergency shelters were set up yesterday by the Red Cross’ Seyðisfjörður department to accommodate travellers affected by yesterday’s heavy downpour. According to Vísir, ten travellers had sought shelter in Seyðisfjörður’s sports centre yesterday evening.

The emergency shelter was intended to accommodate travellers who had planned to spend the night in tents.
“The heavy rain flooded the campsite and water was flowing through the tents,” said Guðjón Sigurðsson, who works for the Red Cross in Seyðisfjörður.

The Icelandic Met Office predicts a northeasterly gale in the northwest and west today, with winds subsiding tomorrow noon. Motorists are urged to show caution when driving near mountains where wind gusts can be particularly strong. While the south will remain dry today, a few showers are forecast other parts of the country.
