Hellisheiði and Mosfellsheiði heaths have been re-opened to traffic after IRCA snowplows have cleared the roads and the wind slowed down. The IRCA warns drivers to expect snow and ice on all roads. People are asked to slow down and drive carefully due to dangerously icy conditions in many areas. The road to Snæfellsnes peninsula was closed shortly after half past ten in the morning due to a serious road accident.

According to the Police in West Iceland five people were injured in the accident, all foreign travellers. Two cars, coming from the opposite directions, were involved in a head-on collision north of Eldborg crater in West Iceland. Conditions on the road (54) are difficult. The road is covered with snow and snow melt, while snow, sleet or hail reduce visibility. According to the Police one person was unconcious when paramedics arrived at the scene. None of the people are in critical condition.
Both cars were destroyed in the accident.
All roads out of Reykjavík are currently open, as are all major heaths along the Ring Road. However, travellers should prepare for the possibility that roads might be closed tonight or tomorrow morning. The IMO is expecting heavy snowfall and strong winds by early Friday morning.
Winter travellers in Iceland are urged to pay close attention to the weather forecast, all weather alerts and road conditions as well as travel alerts from ICE -SAR before embarking on any travel outside urban areas.
