Travellers are warned of difficult driving conditions on the Ring Road on Holtavörðuheiði heath, which connects West Iceland and North Iceland. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority warns of ice and icy patches on the heath, as well as low visibility due to blowing snow.
Like a skating rink
Around noon yesterday foreign travellers crossing the heath lost control of their car due to the ice. The car rolled over, landing on its wheels in the snow on the side of the road. The two travellers were unharmed, and the car was not destroyed in the accident.
The police department in the town of Blöndós, which patrols the heath, told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that the ice on the road on the top of the heath is like in a skating rink.
Other heaths also icy
Drivers are cautioned that most other mountain and heath roads in West, North and East Iceland similarly are similarly slippery due to ice or icy patches.
