The driver who was coming to Reykjavík on the Ring Road thanked his lucky stars after he avoided a head-on collision with an out of control passenger vehicles coming from the opposite direction. The driver of the car coming from the opposite direction had lost control on the icy road while driving at high speed, causing the car to spin around on the road without any control.
Driving conditions were extremely dangerous over the weekend. In addition to the storm, blizzard and limited visibility which made life difficult for travellers, the Ring Road, like all other roads in Iceland, was covered in ice and icy spots. We can expect conditions to remain similar in the next several days or weeks, so remember to slow down!
Friðrik Helgi Friðriksson was coming to Reykjavík from West Iceland on Saturday afternoon when he noticed an out of control car coming from the opposite direction. The event was captured on Friðriks dashboard camera, but the vide does not capture the sheer terror of the moment. Friðrki told the local news site Vísir that it all happened so fast that he barely managed to think about what was happening.
I saw the car appear, coming from the opposite direction. And then it suddenly careens over onto the wrong side of the road. Friðrik tried to pull over to the shoulder, allowing the car, which had narrowly managed to return to its own lane, to barrel alongside him. Friðrik saw in the rear view mirror that the car then continued to spin around on the road. Finally the car bumped into the snow on the side of the road and came to a full stop, facing the wrong way, but on the right side of the road.
Friðrik told vísir that he had decided to share the video because the stretch of the Ring Road, where the accident took place, has been under scrutiny in recent weeks due to a high number of accidents in the area. The Ring Road out of Reykjavík, between the city and the Hvalfjarðargöngin tunnel on the way to West Iceland is one of the busiest parts of the Ring Road.
The weekend's weather caused several car accidents, including two collisions in Reykjavík and on the highway to Keflavík Airport, each involving eight seperate vehicles. Only one person was seriously injured in those accidents.
