Hair-raising dashboard video captures travellers inches away from causing a pile-up crash 7563

A group of drivers narrowly escaped a disaster on Wednesday morning on the Ring Road near the village of Hella in South Iceland. The terrifying scene was caught by a dashboard cam by a local man, Bessi Jónsson. Bessi shared the footage on Facebook with the comment:

Fuuu… I almost didn't make it home for Christmas…

The video shows a car swerve onto the wrong side of the road, barreling across the road and off down the shoulder. Bessi told the local news site Vísir that when he was approaching four cars which were coming from the opposite direction the first of the four cars suddenly slows down: attempting to avoid a collision the second car then swerves to the left, onto the wrong side of the road. A fraction of a second later and Bessi would have crashed at full speed into this vehicle.

The third car managed to slow down and stop before ramming into the back of the first vehicle, but doing so caused it to be hit by the fourth vehicle. Sigurður William Brynjarsson, who drove the third car told Vísir that the first car was driven by Chinese travellers.

Driving conditions were challenging when the accident took place. The road was slick, with snow and snow-melt. The distance between the four cars appear to have been too small for the speed at which they were driving and the driving conditions. The first driver also makes a dangerous snap decision to slow down suddenly, causing the other drivers to panic.

Fortunately no one was injured in the incidence.
