Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, better known as The Mountain was crowned the World's Strongest Man over the weekend in Manila on the Philippines. The Polish strongman Mateusz Kieliszkowski landed in second place, and American strongman Brian Shaw in third place. This is the ninth time an Icelander is crowned the World's Strongest Man and the first time Hafþór receives the title. Hafþór is also the third Icelander to win the title.
In 2017 Hafþór ended in second place in the competition for the title, after losing to English strongman Eddie Hall. Hafþór claimed he was robbed of the title on that occasion, arguing that the decision to disallow one of his press-ups was unjust.

Hafþór has ended in second place on two other occasions and three times in third place. The last time an Icelander won the title ws in 1996, when Magnús Ver Magnússon won the title. Magnús won the title four times, in 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1996. The other Icelander who has won the title is Jón Páll Sigmarsson who won the title in 1984, 1986, 1987 and 1990.
Last year Hafþór was crowned Europe's strongest man.

Hafþór has faced accusations from former partners for domestic violence or abusive behavior which he has vehemently denied. He has also been involved in a custody battle with his former girlfriend over a small Pomeranian puppy.
