Carsten Weirich is a 39 year old freelance journalist from Stuttgart, Germany, who got addicted to Iceland in 2010 and has returned at least once every year since. The photos above are by Carsten, and are from his trips around the island.

What brought you Iceland for the first time?
It was that moment in 2009 when two of my friends came back from their first visit to Iceland. They went there for the Iceland Airwaves music festival but they also did some trips to the main sights near Reykjavík and they had a sparkle in their eyes when they told me about Icelandic music, the nature and the people. So I immediately decided to go to the Iceland Airwaves 2010 with some friends. And from that day on I travel to Iceland at least once every year.

Where did you go during your stay?
We always come for the Iceland Airwaves in November but before that we travel around for a week or so. I’ve been around the whole coast but unfortunately I have never been to the mountains so far. Someday I have to come to Iceland during the summer.

What Icelandic music do you recommend?
I do love Icelandic music! I adore Sigur Rós. They’re my favorite band. I even got one of the paintings by their singer Jónsi, as a tattoo. And I really love Svavar Knútur. He’s the funniest singer I ever met and over the years we became friends. He did an amazing surprise concert for my wife’s birthday at our place in Germany last September. Some other great Icelandic bands I can highly recommend are Lily of the Valley, Dísa, Bloodgroup, GusGus, FM Belfast, Samaris and For a Minor Reflection.

What are your favourite restaurants and bars in Reykjavík?
I really like the Lebowski Bar because it’s a good place to get wasted and party. My favourite restaurant is the Sea Baron (Sægreifinn) because of its delicious lobster soup. I also love the Icelandic tapas in the Tapas Barinn and the traditional food in Café Loki. And there’s the amazing Café Babalú, the coziest place to eat some snacks and drink coffee.

Any favourite part of the country?
There are some amazing but very touristic spots like Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, Gullfoss waterfall or the black beach near the village of Vík. But the part of Iceland I like most are the Westfjords. I love how rough and beautiful nature is there and I love the solitude. If you ever go to Suðureyri town you have to stay at the wonderful Fisherman hotel. The host is a really cool guy and an excellent cook.

Will you return?
Jesus, of course! I don’t want to miss a single year. We already booked our flight for the Airwaves 2015.

Where to next?
In about one week my wife and me will travel to the Cap Verde Islands. We just want to relax for some days, get some sun and have a good and easy time there.
