The popularity of the citybike service introduced in the summer of 2017 enjoys growing popularity, according to information from WOW air, which operates the service for the city of Reykjavík. The increase in August was 10% over last year.
Total numbers for the summer of 2018 are not yet ready, as the bike rentals will remain open until the end of October, but so far the popularity of the citybikes appears to have increased significantly this year over the previous, despite rain and weather which was not ideal for biking around the city.
A spokesman for WOW air told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that not a single bike has gone missing since the rental was launched, and according to WOW the bikes and the rental stations have neither been vandalized nor damaged intentionally.
The rental was launched in June 2017, with eight rental stations around downtown Reykjavík, with a total of 100 bikes. The rental stations will be taken down for the winter later this month, and will be put up again next spring.
