The seven people, including two children aged 3 and 9, that were rescued yesterday from their vehicles are safe and sound. The director of the search and rescue team Súlur says the group was travelling from Kerlingafjöll, in the central highlands, to Bárðardalur, north Iceland, when one of the jeeps broke down.

“The others stopped to help but got their vehicles stuck in the process.”

When rescue units finally located the group at around 8am, they had all huddled up inside one of the jeeps in order to keep warm. Skúli commends them and says that they reacted correctly by staying calm and not attempting to reach town on foot.
“The past hours have been very trying for all those involved,” Skúli told Fréttablaðið.
