The people were driving on highland route F910 Austurleið road when they decided to drive off-road to get around a vehicle that was blocking the river crossing at Þríhyrningsá river. The group drove their three SUVs 200 meters (660 ft) along the river, leaving deep tracks in the ground.

Due to the very cold and short summers vegetation in the Central Highlands grows very slowly and takes decades to recover from damage. Moss, for example, can grow by as little as a couple of millimeters (0.08 in) annually. Due to the very wet ground driving off-road also leaves deep tracks in the ground that have to be repaired by hand.

The local news site Vísir reports that the people were cited 100,000 ISK (920 USD/810 EUR) for each of the three vehicles, for a total of 300,000 ISK (2,800 USD/2,400 EUR).
