Three of 10-11 grocery stores raise prices in the evening and weekends, reports Vísir. The stores’ electronic shelf labels automatically up prices after 8pm on weekdays and during weekends.
10-11 operates 24-hours stores around the country, but only three of the grocery chain’s stores raise prices after regular working hours: Austurstræti, Laugavegur, and Barónsstígur, all located in downtown Reykjavík.
CEO Árni Pétur Jónsson claims the rise is due to increased operation cost of the stores located in downtown Reykjavík. Product price in those three stores increases by around 8% in the evenings and weekends.
Teitur Atlason with the Icelandic Consumer Rights Agency says that grocery stores are legally allowed to set weekend rates, however, the polite thing to do would have been to inform customers.
“Consumers can take their business elsewhere for a fairer price,” he adds.
