13. mar 2023 20:41

According to the aurora forecast of the Icelandic Meteorological office the best chance to catch a glimpse of the northern lights this week should be tonight. The IMO forecasts a grade three activity (scale 1-9). IMO explains that grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling.

The aurora activity is expected to rise on Tuesday and Wednesday, reaching a grade of 5, high, which can produce spectacular northern lights. Unfortunately, the forecast also includes a thick cloud cover over virtually all of Iceland, making it close to impossible to catch a glimpse of the Northern lights.

IMO builds its forecast on combined information on aurora activity, cloud cover, sunlight and moonlight. Clear skies are crucial to seeing and enjoying the Northern lights. According to the IMO the skies should be clear over all of Iceland, safe for parts of the coast of South East Iceland.

If you were planning on catching the Northern lights this week, tonight might be your best chance! We will keep you posted on the weather and aurora forecasts later this week.

Be sure to dress warmly if you are heading into the night as it will be rather chilly around the country, and check the weather forecast before heading out!
