GPS maps in rental cars have a number of times unintentionally directed hapless travellers to the farm Þingvellir in Helgafellssveit instead of Þingvellir National Park, reports the National Broadcasting Service.
Sumarliði Ásgeirsson, who lives at Þingvellir farm, told the National Broadcasting Service he often receives confused travellers at his home. “I tell them they are only a two hour drive from Þingvellir National Park. But many seem quite lost and perplexed about the whole matter,” he said.

GPS equipment in rental cars has also led travellers onto mountain roads that are closed in winter. Rescue services in East Iceland have had to assist motorists who have gotten into difficulties on the old road across Múlinn in Jökuldalur. In most cases GPS maps in rental cars led the travellers onto the road, which is not cleared of snow during winter.
